What is beta-thalassemia?
Beta thalassemia is an inherited genetic disorder characterized by reduced functional hemoglobin as there is a fault in DNA that synthesizes hemoglobin.
Reduced levels of hemoglobin cause a shortage of oxygen supply in the body that can result in various problems and ultimately death.
Signs and symptoms of thalassemia:
- Breathing problems
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Enlarged spleen
- Bone deformities
- Problems in the liver, heart, kidney, etc.
Blood requirement for thalassemia patients
Over one lakh thalassemia patients across the country die before they turn 20 due to lack of access to treatment or shortage of blood. There is no other alternative for human blood. The major thalassemia patients require 8-12 blood transfusions a year.
